Aston Villa has cancelled training with a significant number of first team players testing positive.

For now at least, Liverpool’s third round FA Cup tie against Aston Villa at Villa Park is set to kick off at 7:45PM GMT on Friday evening.

However, a coronavirus outbreak that has forced the Birmingham-based club shut down their training grounds today and left a number of first team players in self-isolation could put it in serious doubt.

“A large number of first team players and staff returned positive tests after being routinely tested on Monday,” read today’s concerning statement from Aston Villa. “A second round of testing was carried out immediately and produced more positive results.

“First team training ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup match with Liverpool was cancelled. Discussions are ongoing between medical representatives of the club, the Football Association, and the Premier League.”

On the Liverpool end, reports from club-connected journalists suggest Jürgen Klopp’s side are still preparing to travel to play tomorrow.

Elsewhere, Derby County have confirmed that they will FA Cup tie against Chorley using youth and reserve players due to a coronavirus outbreak—a hint that tomorrow’s match could go ahead despite Villa’s situation.

However, Southampton have seen their Sunday cup tie against Shrewsbury Town called off due to a coronavirus outbreak at Shrewsbury.
