Rumour Mongering: Juventus Slap £45m Fee on Merih Demiral
Other suitors include Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Tottenham, and Leicester.
Slow news day today - so here’s another rumour of Liverpool FC signing a Turkish central defender. This time, it’s Juventus’ 22-year old centre-back Merih Demiral. Turkish outlet Fanatik is reporting that Liverpool, along with Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Tottenham, and Leicester, are hoping to sign the young defender this window. Juventus are open to a sale, no loans, and have set their price at around £45m.
This doesn’t really add up in several ways - one, Juventus only paid £16m to sign him 18 months ago. What happened in between that has caused his value to go up by almost 30 million pounds? He only suffered an ACL injury that has limited him to 20 games since. Even stranger, Merih has the weird distinction of having never completed a top-flight season for a club before. First, he was sold by Sporting without having made an appearance, then he spent six months with Alanyaspor, six months with Sassuolo, and has been injured at Juventus.
The only real reason why a move could happen: It’s a tough centre-back room at Juve, with Matthijs de Ligt, Leonardo Bonucci, and Giorgio Chiellini the other options. A Goal.com report details some unhappiness on the pecking order of centrebacks there, but even if he forced a move through to Merseyside, this problem will likely rear its head again with the return of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez beyond this season.
