The Liverpool legend believes Salah’s new contract is worth the extra cash.

Mohamed Salah’s breathtaking goal against Manchester City has re-ignited debate over his contract situation with the club. If Liverpool wanted to have an upper hand in the ongoing contract negotiations, Salah’s performance on the pitch in these early days has made it almost impossible.

The Egyptian has scored nine goals and assisted three others in nine games and doesn’t look anywhere close to slowing down.

Jamie Carragher has been vocal about his belief that Liverpool should splash the cash to tie down the 29-year-old Salah to a new contract. He continued preaching this after the game against Manchester City on Sunday.

“I know the situation Liverpool are in. They don’t have the finances of Manchester City when you think of the wages they give out. But right now, Salah is playing as well as anyone in European football,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“Liverpool cannot afford to let his contract situation drag on, with the threat they could lose him in the next two years. This is a guy who really looks after himself, and you can see that when he takes his top off when he scores a goal. I’m not saying he’s going to be like Cristiano Ronaldo when he’s 35 or 36, still topping the goalscoring charts, but I think this lad’s got a lot in him as he goes into his 30s.”

The situation with Salah has not negatively affected his performance at all, and has been Liverpool’s most consistent goalscorer for several seasons running. If the contract doesn’t get sorted soon, expect the fervor to only grow into the winter.

Meanwhile, Salah and his teammates have shifted into World Cup mode, traveling to their respective countries for the October international break.
