Diogo Jota Says Liverpool Like a “Different Club” with Fans Back
The forward was one of Liverpool’s top performers in his first year at the club but says without fans something was missing.
In his first season at the club, forward Diogo Jota was one of Liverpool’s top performers, racking up the goals and making a strong case as being one of the best signings any Premier League club made in the summer of 2020.
Something, though, was missing for Jota. And that something was the fans at Anfield, which had been part of why he’d been excited to join the Reds in the first place.
“I remember how hard it was to play at Anfield being an opposition player,” Jota told The Liverpool Echo. “Then last year I wasn’t able to play a lot at Anfield with the fans supporting us inside a full stadium like I am doing this season.
“It feels almost like I am playing in a different club from last season because we couldn’t have that support and I believe that our fans are extremely important for us.”
With the fans back, Liverpool’s attack has improved, and no club has created more chances in their opening seven games or scored more goals than the Reds. They’re also top of a very difficult Champions League group after their first two rounds in Europe.
Jota, though, still doesn’t think he and his fellow forwards are performing quite to the level that they’re capable of—he thinks there’s room for them to grow more, to create and score more, and to do more to help the team win.
“I am very happy to be able to play with them and to get results with them [but] I feel like we are still developing our connections,” Jota added of his role as the new star in Liverpool’s attack.
“I think we can improve, but that obviously develops with game-time and facing different opponents together. Hopefully as a front four we can get a lot of goals this season if we do the right things.”
