Jürgen Klopp Compares Not Getting Vaccinated to Driving Drunk
The Liverpool manager hit out hard at anyone refusing to protect themselves and others from coronavirus and said his players are 99% vaccinated.
While most people with access to a coronavirus vaccination have taken the chance to protect themselves and those around them from the pandemic by getting vaccinated, there remains stubborn holdouts.
That is true in society, and it is true in the sporting world. However, according to Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, his squad has overwhelmingly embraced the opportunity to do the responsible thing and get vaccinated.
“I think we can say that we have 99% vaccinated,” Klopp said. “I didn’t have to convince the players, it was a natural decision from the team. I cannot really remember talking to anyone in a one-on-one situation. So gave my advice, but it was not necessary.”
As for what exactly that advice is, Klopp didn’t hold back, stressing the social responsibility in getting vaccinated and comparing the decision not to do so to driving while under the influence of alcohol.
“The vaccination is the solution for the situation,” the Liverpool manager stressed. “I don’t take the vaccination only to protect me, I take the vaccination to protect all the people around me.
“I don’t understand where that is a limitation of freedom. If that’s a limitation of freedom, then not being able to drink and drive is a limitation of freedom as well but it will lead to massive problems if we don’t solve this.
“We’re not supposed to ask people if they’re vaccinated but we can ask a taxi driver if they’re drunk—and if he says ‘I don’t have to tell you’ then you say ‘then I don’t want to drive with you’.
“If I show up to the office drunk then they can send me home or even sack me but we are not allowed to ask people [if they’re vaccinated] and I just don’t understand it.”
In addition to being the right thing to do as members of a society, that Liverpool’s players are all—or almost all, at least—vaccinated will mean those who travel to red list countries over the international break won’t have to quarantine on their return.
At the end of the day, though, Klopp stressed that it’s for the sake of their own health and their larger societal responsibility that are the real, important reasons for having gotten vaccinated.
“I got the vaccination, yes,” Klopp reiterated. “Because I was concerned about myself but even more so for everybody around me. If I get [covid-19] and suffer from it, that’s my fault. If I get it and spread it to somebody else, it’s my fault and not their vault.
“We are vaccinated, all the players or nearly all, and that’s it.”
