Ben Woodburn to Remain at Liverpool on Deadline Day

The 19-year-old’s proposed Hull City loan move has broken down.

On what was otherwise expected to be a quiet deadline day, Liverpool were expected to complete at least one deal: the departure of Ben Woodburn on loan, with Hull City listed as frontrunners to sign the 19-year-old winger for the next six months.

However, that move has broken down and, according to The Evening Standard’s David Lynch—a journalist with ties to the club—the result is that Woodburn is now expected to remain at Anfield for the second half of the 2018-19 season.

Woodburn spent the first half of the campaign on loan with Sheffield United but managed just 154 minutes, struggling to break into a settled side that spent most of the first half of the season near the top of the table fighting for an automatic promotion spot.

He returned to Liverpool with the club fully expecting he would head out on loan again. There no word on why the proposed Hull City move broke down and whether a refusal to guarantee playing time for Woodburn may have played a role.

No matter the reason, though, having Woodburn stuck down the depth chart at Anfield and not playing football for another six months is a far from ideal outcome.
