Liverpool Give Two Youth Players First Start Against Preston North End
Tyler Morton and Harvey Blair start for the Reds against Preston North End in the League Cup
Liverpool were always expected to give youth a chance in the League Cup this season and after handing Kaide Gordon his debut against Norwich in the last round of England’s second cup competition, two youth players will be given their first starts against Preston North End in the Round of 16.
For young midfielder Tyler Morton it will be a first start, or full debut, after the 18-year-old came off the bench for the Reds in the second half against Norwich in the last round. Meanwhile, fellow 18-year-old Harvey Blair—who got his start at Manchester United’s academy—will start in his debut for the senior side.
Morton’s second half appearance against Norwich helped to stabilise Liverpool’s midfield as the Reds eased to a 3-0 victory, and a start against Preston is a deserved reward. For the Huddersfield-born Blair, the young forward is being handed his debut after impressing with the U18s this season.
Blair made the switch to Liverpool in 2015 from United as a 12-year-old and is highly regarded amongst academy watchers, having signed his first professional contract last autumn and then an improved, extended deal in 2021 just six months later.
