Rumour Mongering: Barcelona Consider Divock Origi Transfer
Claims in Spain have Liverpool backup Origi as a potential January striker signing for Barcelona.
Divock Origi has struggled to find minutes at Liverpool in recent years, but his cameo appearances this season have served to remind everyone that the 26-year-old Belgian remains a quality striker, one who would start for many clubs.
Meanwhile, following the departures of Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann, Barcelona are struggling to find the goal this season with 11 in their first seven league games—half Real Madrid’s 22 and behind the likes of Rayo Vallecano and Valencia.
It’s a situation that has the Blaugranes looking for a January striker reinforcement while knowing that they don’t have the funds to pay more than around €25M and will need a player whose wage demands won’t strain their limited budget.
Enter Origi, at least as Spain’s Sport see it, who list the Liverpool man as one of four potential January striker signings for the Catalan club along with Edinson Cavani, Lorenzo Insigne, and Andrea Belotti—a list that in the past would raise eyebrows.
Such is Barcelona’s current difficult position, though, that all would likely represent real upgrades on their current situation. However, longer term one has to wonder if joining Barcelona would actually be in any of those players’ best interests.
The Catalan club aren’t where they want to be and seem open to signing a stop-gap striker, but it seems obvious that’s all they would be. Still, a chance to play more regularly in the present might appeal to Origi or one of the others on their list.
