Starting for Liverpool Fulfilled “Boyhood Dream” for Tyler Morton
The 18-year-old midfielder’s solid second half performance against Norwich was rewarded with a start against Preston.
Against Norwich City in the third round of the League Cup, 18-year-old Tyler Morton came on in the second half and helped to stabilise Liverpool’s midfield in what was his first senior appearance for the club.
That strong performance was rewarded with a full debut for the youngster against Preston North End and a start at the base of midfield in a match the Reds went on the win 2-0 and had the player buzzing.
“It’s very emotional,” Morton said following Wednesday’s match. “My whole family are here, people who have supported Liverpool for years like my mates. They were here watching me and it gets emotional.
“It’s just a boyhood dream, one I’ve dreamed of since I was born really because I’ve been coming to the games since I was three or four. I can’t really express the feeling. It’s a tough test but that’s what I like.”
In some ways it seemed a tougher test, facing Championship side Preston, than Liverpool’s demolition of Manchester United on the weekend, but a fully changed side will always take time to find their feet.
In the end, then, the Reds had enough talent, skill, and composure on display—including from youngster Morton—to edge past their opponents while giving playing time to youth and fringe players.
“It’s all about making impressions on the manager,” Morton added. “The manager gives us opportunities. He has given us opportunities and that’s what we need. We’re going to do our best to impress.”
