Manchester United had made Leeds’ Phillips a top target but Liverpool interest could derail their plans.

Liverpool were linked with numerous midfielders over the past summer as the rumour mongers believed the club were seeking to replace the departed Gini Wijnaldum. In the end, none of those rumours amounted to more than that.

One of the linked players, though, was Leeds United 25-year-old England international Kalvin Phillips. And Liverpool weren’t the only ones linked with a move for him. Manchester United were also said to be looking to sign the player.

A few months on and talk of Liverpool interest has largely faded but Phillips continues to be talked up as a potential top target for United for the summer of 2022. Or at least Liverpool’s supposed interest in him seemed to have faded.

Because according to The Star, the Reds are coming back for Phillips to complicate matters for the Red Devils, and their renewed interest in the player could undo the groundwork United have done on the Phillips front in recent months.

Of course, it’s worth remembering that the 2022 summer transfer window is still rather a long way off. And it seems convenient, from a narrative standpoint, for Liverpool interest to be mentioned again following Sunday’s derby win.

With Liverpool rather embarrassing United 5-0 over the weekend, what better time to remember that the Reds were also linked to United’s supposed top midfield target just a few short months ago and revive the rumours?

For Leeds, meanwhile, Phillips remains under contract until 2024 and the West Yorkshire club are said to want to sign the midfield to a new deal in order to ensure that his long-term future remains at Elland Road.
