Darwin Núñez Talks About His Friendship Between Fellow Uruguayans Mac Allister and Suarez
The three players are friends on and off the pitch.
Darwin Núñez and Alexis Mac Allister are the two Uruguay internationals currently on Liverpool’s roster. However, the most famous of their countrymen to put on a Red shirt is Luis Suarez, who made a big impact at Liverpool from 2011 to 2014. Yes, Suarez left Merseyside a decade ago. Sorry to make you come face to face with your own mortality on a Saturday.
Recently, Núñez spoke with ESPN Uruguay about his bond with the other two players. Of Suarez he said, “With Luis we sometimes talk about a little bit of everything,” said Nunez. “For example, we talk about a lady in the Liverpool kitchen who adores Luis very much. The last time we talked about her, she sent her regards.
“Off the field we have a very good bond, I always follow him because Luis is an idol for me, and he also advises me a lot. For example, the time the headbutt thing happened, Luis was the first to write to me.
“‘You idiot, don’t do that, another idiot who was told a thousand times is talking to you,’ he told me. With Luis we created a very nice bond.”
I guess it’s nice that Suarez appears aware of his...interesting history and track record in terms of comically villainous on field incidents. Maybe age has wizened him, and now he’s passing on his hard-earned knowledge to the next generation.
As for current teammate Mac Allister, Núñez explained their goal celebration, which is to mimic sharing a maté.
“It all started because he criticised my maté,” explained Nunez. “One day we were sitting at the table, he criticised my maté again and it occurred to us that whoever scored a goal, the other would give him a maté. It all came from there.”
Both players, along with literally every other current member of Liverpool’s squad and all of their back room staff as well, are rumoured to be leaving this summer. It’s impossible to know what this summer’s shake-up will bring, but it would be nice if we get to see both men playing together again next season.
