Julian Ward Reunites with Michael Edwards at New Fenway Sports Group Set Up
Julian Ward returns to Fenway Sports Group as its new technical director.
The transition at Liverpool in the post-Klopp era is still working through some questions, but the biggest ones around who will help shepherd the executive decisions as well as who will man the sidelines are, mostly, decided. Richard Hughes has already been officially named to take over the role of sporting director at Liverpool and Feyenoord’s Arne Slot set to replace Jurgen Klopp as the gaffer.
Michael Edwards’ return to Fenway Sports Group as its new CEO of Football has signaled a significant shift in how FSG intend to keep pace with the major outfits in world football. The broad understanding is that Edwards will oversee the acquisition and management of multiple football clubs within the FSG stable as a means of remaining competitive.
Yesterday, there was an announcement that as part of the building out of this division at FSG, Edwards has brought back former Liverpool executive Julian Ward to become FSG’s new technical director. According to reporting from The Athletic, Ward will oversee the Liverpool’s Academy, FSG’s loan program, elite player development strategies, and the implementation of a new department within the structure related to “football innovation.”
Along with that announcement comes news that Edwards has also appointed former Benfica executive Pedro Marques as FSG’s director of football development. Within FSG’s structure, Marques would report to Ward and be key in establishing effective player development strategies throughout the entire football setup.
The work at FSG, of which Liverpool will be a large part, continues apace and based on these major moves, it looks like it will be a major project. It will be interesting to look back in 10 years and see what impact these changes will have on the quality of football and the stability of the overall operations across FSG’s holdings and, specifically, at LFC.
