Matt Beard and Liverpool Women Look To Close out Season on High Note
After statement victories over Chelsea and Manchester United, LFCW head into the season finale against Leicester.
Whatever happens in the final week of the FA Women’s Super League season, Liverpool’s 2023-24 has been a massive success as after years of being an ignored afterthought for the club and spending time in the second division, a rebuilt side is assured a top five finish.
In fact, any kind of a result against Leicester City on the final day of the season on Saturday, May 18th will mean Matt Beard’s side will finish in fourth place ahead of Manchester United thanks to last Sunday’s 1-0 home finale victory for the the Reds over the rival Red Devils.
“The players have shown an amazing amount of resilience and resolve,” the manager said following that result. “We also played over 110 minutes against Chelsea with all the added-on time. When you factor that in, it’s tough to do it all again against United but we did.
“I thought we were absolutely in control of the game against United and comfortable. What a way for us to finish at Prenton Park with six points against Chelsea and Man United. It just shows the mentality, the progress we have made and how exciting this group can be.”
Beating United in their home finale after defeating Chelsea in a wild 4-3 goal-fest mid-week makes for quite the statement to close out the season—especially given that victory over Chelsea all but mathematically ended the Blues’ hopes of defending their 2022-23 title.
Now three points up on United heading into the final week, the goal is to end the season on a high note and begin to look ahead to next season, when they will try and force their way into the mix with Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea in the top three European places.
“These players on the back of this year, the experience they have got under their belts, they know what to expect for next season,” Beard added. “Now they can prepare themselves physically and mentally for it. This is a fantastic young team that is only going to get better.
“We are only going to grow together. We have beaten two of the top teams in our country in the space of four days, having only had one game prior to that in four weeks. I think that is a testament to the group.”
