Matt Beard Reacts to Liverpool Women’s Thrilling Victory Over Chelsea
Liverpool Women may have just cost Chelsea an FAWSL title with a thrilling stoppage time victory
While on the men’s side April has been a cruel month of dashed hopes for Liverpool, on the women’s side there’s been reason for even more optimism towards the end of a hope-filled 2023-24 season.
Matt Beard’s side currently sit fourth after a pair of wins and with just two games left in the season, and their latest was a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over title challenging Chelsea.
“What a fantastic game of football,” Beard said afterwards. “Not good for my heart, that’s for sure! It was a great game. We’re fighting for fourth spot, Chelsea are fighting for the title. We knew they were a little bit vulnerable after the way the last month has been for them.
“When you get in front and then get pegged back against a team like Chelsea, to keep going and keep scoring was a great testament to the character of the group,”
Wednesday’s seven-goal thriller took until stoppage time for Liverpool to score their winner, and with it Chelsea are now six points back of Manchester City but with a game in hand on the favourites following Liverpool’s win.
For the Reds, top four may not mean Europe on the women’s side—currently that only goes to the top three—but it would be a finish few would have predicted for this young team at the start of the year.
“We’ve made massive strides,” Beard added. “We decided to go young with the recruitment and I feel the team has grown together. The exciting thing for me is the team is only going to get better.
