Rumor Mongering: Darwin Nuñez to Depart for Barcelona
The rumor slingers really want you to buy this one!
The formula for a tried and true transfer rumor is usually Player [x]+issues with [club/production/both]+club B in need of someone at Player [x]’s position=surefire rumor. In this case, reports out of Spain and picked up by English press are playing this game of transfer calculus with Darwin Nuñez.
According to folks in the know, Barcelona are looking for a replacement for striker Robert Lewandowski. And top of Xavi’s purchase list is Liverpool’s Uruguayan forward.
Fueling the speculation that this could be on the cards is activity on Darwin’s social media page, notably that he was spotted with fellow countryman and Barcelona defender, Ronald Araujo. Also, it appears as though Nuñez’s Instagram has been scrubbed of all photos of him in a Liverpool shirt.
This rumor is clearly a bit spicier than most in that it involves this added drama of a potentially unhappy player who is also undergoing an unfortunately down period of form. It’s the kind of stuff that lends itself to a period in the footballing calendar where there’s a sudden dearth of matches and the hope for meaningful results relies on the kind of miracle not often seen in sport. Which is to say: for those that are bored or prone to conspiracy theorizing or both, this is kind of the perfect storm.
I don’t believe there’s much doing at all and, if anything, it’s likely a very human reaction to a rough patch on the part of Darwin. But in case you needed extra cold water to be thrown onto the fire, there’s the fact that Fabrizio Romano, a man that’s never met a rumor he didn’t like, has also mooted the likelihood that Darwin is pushing for a transfer.
So, I guess, here we don’t go.
