Rumor Mongering: Van den Berg - Bakayoko Swap Deal In The Works?

Swap deals never happen, but could Liverpool and PSV come to terms this time? (Spoiler: no)

In what is a borderline “your transfer rumor is bullshit” territory, we have an alleged swap deal in the making, with defender Sepp Van den Berg (and presumably a lot of money) going to PSV, with exciting young attacker Johan Bakayoko coming the other way.

Swap deals almost never happen in the modern game, for a variety of reasons, including agents wanting their individual fees from individual deals.

However, there is some truthiness to this potential deal. Van den Berg wants to find a forever home, but thinks Liverpool’s €20 million asking price is cost prohibitive, and likely preventing him from finding a club that will allow him to kick on with his career. And on the other side, Liverpool could really use an attacker as part of a succession plan for replacing the one and only Mo Salah.

Bakayoko has a profile that might interest Liverpool too. He’s just 21 years old, and contributed 14 goals and 14 assists to PSV’s title winning campaign last year. Then again, attackers from the Eredivisie don’t always have the greatest success rate when making the move to the Premier League.

There’s probably nothing in this, other than your standard issue rumor mongering, but we’ll see.
