The 18-year-old striker put pen to paper before leaving the club for some playing time.

Academy player striker Lewis Koumas officially put pen to paper to sign his first professional contract, and then was immediately shipped out to Stoke City on a season-long loan, as Liverpool are wont to do with their prized (but not so prized) academy players.

Of course, the deal makes sense for everyone. It’s a guaranteed payday for Koumas, plus an easier path toward guaranteed playing time as a striker. And the Reds get to protect their investment, with the possibility of keeping the player long term, should he fulfill his potential.

Koumas made his senior debut with Liverpool last season in the 3-0 win over Southampton in the 5th round of the FA Cup, wherein the young striker scored the opening goal.

He’s an exciting prospect, but faces a massive challenge breaking into Liverpool’s front 3 or 4. It’s a daunting task for any player coming through Liverpool’s academy, but especially daunting in this moment when trying to find a way past the likes of Salah, Nunez, and Jota on the team sheet.

Hopefully this loan spell works out for all involved.
