Liverpool face an increasingly concerning situation regarding the contracts of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Another summer transfer window inevitably means another summer with a sizeable section of Liverpool’s fanbase unhappy because they perceive the club as not being as aggressive about new signings as they would like.

While in the past such discontent might have seemed churlish, with the club kicking off the new season on Saturday without having made a single first team signing for new manager Arne Slot a few questions are probably fair.

What might be a far more genuine cause for concern than no new signings having been made to date to augment what is an already exceptionally strong squad, though, is the contract status of three of the club’s biggest stars.

Captain Virgil van Dijk, superstar winger Mohamed Salah, and homegrown standout Trent Alexander-Arnold are all entering the final year of their contracts. All three will be able to sign a pre-contract outside England in January.

All three, should their situations go unaddressed, would be lost to free transfers in less than 12 months. It’s an increasingly concerning situation for the club and fans, and it’s something even the players are starting to be asked about.

Perhaps understandably, though, they’re trying to avoid answering, with Trent Alexander-Arnold brushing off attempts to broach the subject following Saturday’s 1-0 opening day victory over newly promoted Ipswich Town.

“I don’t know what you’d possibly want to speak to me about!” was the Scouse star’s response to questions about his future before making a quick escape. Hopefully he and the others will have good news to talk about shortly.
