The new Liverpool head coach gets his first Champions League match at home as Bologna visit Anfield in the Champions League on Wednesday.

After six Premier League games under new head coach Arne Slot, Liverpool sit top of the table. They’ve passed their first test in the League Cup, sweeping aside West Ham 5-1. And in Europe, they won their first Champions League game on the road against AC Milan.

Next up, on Wednesday, Slot’s Reds play their first European home game of the season. For the first time under Slot, they will play at mid-week in the Champions League at Anfield. It’s something, not surprisingly, that the Liverpool boss says that he’s looking forward to.

“I know how special a home game at Feyenoord was, but home games in Europe were even more special,” Slot noted. “People told me it’s the same here at Liverpool, [so] I expect a lot when we play. I’m definitely looking forward to my first experience of European nights.”

Their opponent for his first European night at Anfield are Bologna, who after qualifying for Europe’s premier cup competition in fifth place last season have rather struggled to start off the 2024-25 campaign. They currently sit 13th in Serie A with seven points after six games.

After the mid-week European tie, Liverpool travel to London to face Crystal Palace in their final game before the October international break, and two more wins now would put quite the exclamation point on what has been a very promising start at Liverpool for Slot.

“I inherited a lot of quality, but maybe even more importantly I inherited a team that was fully focused on hard work,” he added. “I wouldn’t say I was surprised, but it was nice to see it was like Jürgen [Klopp] told me, that that was the culture I experienced from the start.”
