Mohamed Salah Reportedly Wants to Extend Liverpool Stay
Briefings from the player’s side point to a superstar determined to extend his time at Liverpool. Now it’s up to the club to make it happen.
Mohamed Salah’s contract situation has become the story of the September international break for Liverpool fans after the player opened up about the situation following a starring turn in Sunday’s 3-0 demolition of Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The 32-year-old forward provided the assists for Liverpool’s first two goals before scoring himself for the third, and the Egyptian superstar already has six goal involvements from the Reds’ first three Premier League games to kick off the 2024-25 season.
His contract is also set to expire at the end of the current campaign, and his revelation on Sunday that the club had yet to discuss a possible extension was quickly followed up by reports that he favoured a stay. Those reports have now been reconfirmed.
According to Paul Gorst in The Echo in a story that appears sourced from the plaher’s side, Salah and his family are settled and happy at Liverpool and see other stars’ experiences in the Saudi Pro League—including that of ex-Red Sadio Mané—as cautionary.
While the lure of even greater wealth for football’s stars is often talked up as the draw of the Saudi Pro League, the football infrastructure is less developed, fan attendance lower, and there remains little appetite for the product amongst global audiences.
It’s further stressed that maximizing his potential wages won’t be the determining factor in where Salah plays his football beyond the current season. All of which only bolsters the growing idea if Salah isn’t at Liverpool next year, it will be the club’s choice.
Salah remains amongst the game’s top performers, consistently delivering both top line production and underlying numbers that place him amongst the game’s best attackers and showing no signs of significant drop-off as he begins his eighth year in Red.
Add it all up and it’s frankly preposterous to suggest letting him leave on a free at the end of the season would be in Liverpool’s interest. Salah wants to stay. By making it public he’s giving up leverage in order to do so. Now it’s up to the club to do their part.
