If Liverpool’s record against Manchester United last season was disappointing, Sunday’s thorough 3-0 victory was back to business as usual.

After getting rather used to dominating Manchester United during the Jürgen Klopp era, the 2023-24 season was a relatively difficult one for Liverpool against their historic rivals, with a pair of league draws and an extra time defeat that knocked them out of the FA Cup.

On Sunday in the third game of the 2024-25 season and third game under new head coach Arne Slot, things got back to their dominant norm for the Reds, and after the match left back Andy Robertson said that and a little bit of revenge for last year was definitely the goal.

“I think we were really frustrated here last season because I thought in the two games that we played we dominated the games,” he said, referring to the 4-3 extra time cup defeat and 2-2 momentum-sapping Premier League draw the following month at Old Trafford.

“We didn’t end up with the results we wanted, especially in the FA Cup because I thought we were in complete control and threw it away. From that point of view we were extremely frustrated, so when you come here again you want to put that right and you don’t want to be feeling the same.”

If there was any risk of heading home Sunday with the sense of disappointment that marked those two earlier games, a pair of well taken Luis Diaz goals in the first half—both set up by Mohamed Salah—stamped the Reds’ authority on a game already tilting their way.

When Salah scored his own in the second half, Liverpool were able to dial it back and conserve energy as United tried in vain to make a game out of it. Slot’s Reds were dominant when they had to be, and with a three goal cushion were free to manage the game across the finish line.

“We are just delighted,” Robertson added, and rightly so. “Before the international break I think it’s crucial kind of to get the three points and set us all on our way happy and excited, and it’s done that. Hopefully everyone can come back fit—and fighting fit.”
