Matip remains without a club following the expiry of his contract with Liverpool but West Ham could offer the centre half an unexpected landing spot.

Despite being a standout performer for Liverpool across eight seasons, Joël Matip and Liverpool parted ways when the 33-year-old’s contract expired at the end of an injury-hit 2023-24 season and the Bochum-born centre half remains without a club.

A shock return to the Premier League could be on the cards for the unemployed defender, though, with claims this week that West Ham are looking at signing him as a free agent after failing to replace Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd following their summer departures.

That Matip isn’t currently under contract would allow West Ham to register the player if they were to sign him, which Sky Sports and others claim is a possibility. The Hammers are also said to be looking at John Egan, who played last season for Sheffield United.

Of the two, the choice seems a fairly easy and obvious one, as the two veteran players have both struggled with fitness in recent years but Matip played more than twice the minutes of Egan last season—and has performed at a higher level throughout his career.

Hopefully, whether it ends up being at Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham or some other club in England or abroad, Matip can find himself a new football home and get back to training with club teammates before the end of the September international break.
