Rumor Mongering: Slot Reunion With Benfica Midfielder Orkun Kökçü?
Liverpool have reportedly sent scouts to watch the Turkish midfielder with a staggering £125m release clause
It is no secret that Liverpool would quite like a defensive midfielder of some description, and that they are quite willing and able to shell out the dough to make it happen. The summer before last they tried to sign both Roméo Lavia and Moisés Caicedo, both of whom decided instead to join Chelsea’s 157-man squad, on 84-year contracts. And this summer, Liverpool failed to sign Martín Zubimendi, whose love of mountains was just too great to overcome (respect).
Those signings would’ve cost Liverpool between £50m and £110m, so the money is clearly there for the right player.
That brings us to midfielder Orkun Kökçü, a Arne Slot alumni from his Feyenoord days, who is currently plying his trade in Portugal at Benfica. If the rumor mongers are to be believed, Kökçü has a release clause of £125m, and Liverpool’s scouts have reportedly been out to watch the player.
Kökçü, who is still just 23 years old, and getting regular starts for a Champions League side, certainly fits the profile of player that Liverpool might be interested in. That he has played for and won things with Liverpool’s current manager is also no bad thing.
That said, £125m is a lot, even if we would really like another midfielder.
