The claims in Spain from Real Madrid’s press mouthpiece have Alexander-Arnold close to joining Los Blancos.

While Liverpool’s 2024-25 season has started exceptionally well on the pitch, off it the concerns surrounding the contract status of three key superstar players has been a story that will continue likely until their futures are determined.

For Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold there is a ticking clock with all three able to sign pre-contract agreements with clubs outside of England as soon as January 1st—and in the case of Alexander-Arnold at least, a clear suitor.

Real Madrid have been linked with the homegrown right back since the summer transfer window closed with Alexander-Arnold not having signed an extension, and the rumours have ticked up significantly again following the latest from Marca.

That’s because Madrid’s press mouthpiece are claiming Liverpool are growing increasingly resigned to the idea the player will not sign a new deal and that not only will Madrid get him next summer—they might even be able to get him in January.

Liverpool fans will likely seek solace in the fact that Marca are not, despite their prominent role in Spanish football coverage, especially reliable. They will be relaying information that comes entire from the Madrid end and works to Madrid’s ends.

They likely won’t, though, be creating the story out of whole cloth. Accurate or not, this is information they’re being fed. And however this all ends, it’s the inevitable result of Liverpool allowing the player to get to the final year of his contract.

If Alexander-Arnold were to join Madrid on a free, though, the player would open himself up to considerable criticism for leaving his boyhood club without even a transfer fee to show for his departure—something they at least got for Michael Owen.
