Gakpo: Team Performance Against Ipswich “Almost Perfect”
The forward carried forward on his terrific form, contributing a brace in the Reds’ comprehensive victory over Ipswich Town.
Liverpool put on a rampant display against Ipswich Town, winning 4-1 and taking all three points. Meaning that, again, Liverpool forced those chasing them - Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, specifically - to take maximum points in order to keep pace.
On a day like this, it can be hard to single out performers given just how thoroughly Ipswich were dispatched. Cody Gakpo, though, contributed a brace as well as an assist, playing a role in 75% of the goals on behalf of Liverpool. The Dutch winger then not only carried on their scintillating form, but was central to just about every positive happening on the pitch.
Approached by the official site following the match, Gakpo shared his thoughts on how the match went.
“Yeah, I think it was very important that we got the early goal. So, very happy that Dom scored – I think it was a great goal from him and that opened the game up a little bit and then we kept going. Even in half-time we said, ‘Let’s keep going and try to score more goals and keep a clean sheet.’ But unfortunately the last one we couldn’t keep it.”
Liverpool’s forward line entered this season a bit maligned - even Gakpo, who’d played in several different roles throughout that season, struggled to find his feet.
Now, though, the Dutchman is absolutely flying. Tough to attribute it to just one thing, but an obvious shift is that Gakpo is playing in his preferred position and, seemingly, reaping the benefits of that.
Liverpool now turn their sites on a trip to the Netherlands to face Gakpo’s former club, PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday. Waiting for them on the weekend, though, is Bournemouth, who put Liverpool’s toughest opponents this season to date, Nottingham Forest, to the sword in their 5-nil victory. Lots to focus on and the football is coming thick and fast, with the Reds still alive in all competitions.
