Virgil Van Dijk “Proud” Of 300 Appearances For Liverpool
The Liverpool captain reached a milestone against Ipswich on Saturday
There are a few key players who can be pointed out as major building blocks for Jürgen Klopp as he built one of the strongest sides in Europe that won every trophy possible. Virgil van Dijk is undoubtedly at or near the top of that list, serving as an anchor in the defense since moving to Liverpool in the winter of 2018.
The Dutch defender reached a major personal milestone on Saturday, making his 300th appearance for the Reds as they defeated Ipswich 4-1. After the match, van Dijk noted that that his family were on hand to mark the occasion. Despite the accomplishment, he also doesn’t plan to reflect too much until he is done with his playing days.
“I’m very proud. My family and my kids were here today so that was a special day. It was a good win so now we focus on the next one. There will be a day, one day, when I will reflect on everything that happened to me at Liverpool and have a proper think about what stands out, but hopefully there are still things to come.”
The statistics with van Dijk in the side are staggering. Liverpool have won 69.7% of their matches when he plays (nice), and have only lost in 14.6% of the matches. With Virgil, the Reds won their first Premier League title in 30 years, won the Champions League while also making the final two more times, and also added in an FA Cup, a couple of EFL Cups, and a Club World Cup.
Despite having turned 33 this summer, van Dijk is playing some of his best football to date under new manager Arne Slot. The Reds have conceded the joint fewest goals in the league, and are free and clear at the top of both the Premier League and Champions League tables. There’s a good chance that van Dijk will add to his legacy this year, and hopefully into the future should his contract situation be resolved (pay him).
