PSV Eindhoven 3, Liverpool 2 - Match Recap: A Match Happened (And Reds Finish Top)

A look back at the key moments in Liverpool’s defeat that emphatically happened against PSV Eindhoven in Champions League action.
PSV Eindhoven 3 - 2 Liverpool
PSV: Bakayoko 35’, Saibari 45’, Bradley 45+6’ (OG), Player XX’
Reds: Gakpo 28’ (pen), Elliott 40’
Pre-Match
Arne Slot sends out what can only be called a changed side. Most of Liverpool’s regular starters have been left back on Merseyside, but this is as close as we’re every likely to see to a dead rubber in this new Champion’s League format.
First Half
Okay, I’m not going to pretend to be fully focused on this match. THERE IS TOO MUCH FOOTBALL GOING ON AND IT’S AWESOME. I’m flipping back and forth between this match and coverage of other matches, which has been labeled “goal-amok” here in Denmark.
After 25 fairly meh minutes of football, Chiesa wins a penalty! Cody Gakpo steps up to the spot and coolly slots after a short run-up (and sending the keeper the wrong way) against his former club.
Liverpool’s entire makeshift defense was sent for The Echo, and then sent to an entirely different shop to get a second copy. 1-1.
And the Reds take the lead again! Chiesa unleashes a venomous effort from outside the box, and the keeper can only perry it away, but the rebound falls to Harvey Elliott at the back post, who slots.
The hosts equalize again! More poor defending, which is once again frustrating but understandable from this makeshift defense. And PSV lead. Eventful first half.
Second Half
Slot subs off Cody Gakpo a few minutes into the second half and gets a big applause from the supporters of his former club. It’s a genuinely nice moment.
Other matches are more exciting. Anyway, we look out of ideas, which is understandable. And this match doesn’t matter.
Welp, now Liverpool are down to 10. Amara Nallo had just been on the pitch for 4 minutes before he hacked down a player as the last man and was sent packing.
Final Thoughts
Liverpool finish the Champions League League top, despite the loss. Job done and the kids (mostly) did their club proud.
