The captain praised his young partner’s application.

It’s been an up-and-down season for Liverpool FC’s Jarell Quansah. At times, he’s looked shaky, short of confidence, or just dealt with bad luck in illness and injury preventing him from playing consistently.

Quansah stepped back into the side, helping Liverpool to a 2-1 win against Lille. This secured the Reds’ place in the Champions League knockouts as a top-two seed.

Captain Virgil van Dijk signalled out his young partner for praise after the game:

“It’s a season where Jarell can learn each and every day. He’s a fantastic young player and can only get better.

“He’s in a great place to learn, and when he gets the opportunity to play, like tonight, he just has to show his qualities and play with confidence. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes because we all make mistakes. He did well.”

Quansah’s debut season was nothing short of a revelation. He looked composed and far beyond his years. It’s been different this season, but progress is rarely a linear affair for young players. He’s going through some growing pains, and Virgil is right that he shouldn’t be afraid to make mistakes on the pitch because that’s how he will keep learning and growing in his role.
