Rumour Mongering: Trent Alexander-Arnold Has Rejected Liverpool Offers
The rumour mill has the Liverpool right back rejecting multiple contract offers as he edges towards a Real Madrid move on a free transfer.
Most expected January to be a decisive month for Liverpool when it came to the contract uncertainty swirling around stars Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold but as we near its end it seems as if there has been very little movement.
The trio are now free to talk to foreign clubs, but things look much the same January 23rd as they did December 23rd. Which isn’t great news, especially in the case of Alexander-Arnold, who has been rumoured to favour a move to Real Madrid for some time now.
One new tidbit of rumour chatter arrives today, though, via Sky’s Sacha Tavolieri—who Liverpool fans may have mixed memories of from 2023’s Roméo Lavia affair—who claims that the Reds have in fact made multiple offers to the player that have been rejected.
The sticking point is said to be financial, with the player said to believe he can earn a bigger payday by moving to Madrid—hardly surprising given when clubs buy players on a “free” transfer they more often than not receive an inflated signing-on bonus because of that.
As a result, a player who winds down his contract typically stands to earn more by moving than by sticking around, which is precisely why it’s standard to lock down talented prime age players a good two or three seasons before their contracts are set to expire.
The good news for Liverpool, perhaps, is that while Alexander-Arnold is said to be leaning towards Madrid, nothing has been agreed on that side, either. And Liverpool are said to still have hope an extension with him can be struck. We’ll just have to wait and see.
