Liverpool manager Arne Slot had bad news regarding the centre half ahead of his side’s trip to face Aston Villa.

When Joe Gomez suffered a hamstring injury in Liverpool’s FA Cup loss to Plymouth, the disappointment was palpable. Injuries have never been kind to Gomez, and it can feel at times only ever a matter of when not if.

Following his latest setback, hopes had been it might be minor, but with the player missing league matches against Everton and Wolves there seemed little chance of that—and manager Arne Slot has confirmed as much.

“Joe will take quite a long time,” Slot revealed at his press conference ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa. “He is going to be out now for numerous weeks because of the hamstring injury.

“He tries everything to be with the team, he works really hard to come back, and then first game when he comes back—after just two or three minutes we saw him making a sprint and now he is out for weeks again.”

“That’s always very hard for a player in any part of the season, let alone the part that everybody is looking forward to. He will a miss large part of the end of the season but we expect him to be back in the end phase.”

Slot added that surgery remains an option but not a certainty for Gomez. Meanwhile, there is at least more positive news for Cody Gakpo, who won’t feature against Villa but who Slot does expect will return to action soon.
