Rumour Mongering: Barcelona Still Want to Sign Liverpool’s Luis Diaz

Most of the rumours surrounding Luis Diaz this year have shifted from Spain to Saudi Arabia but Barcelona may not have entirely given up on signing the Colombian winger.
Despite being top of the Premier League heading into the final six weeks of the season, most expect a summer of changes for Liverpool with a few key departures likely along with positions most agree need strengthening if they’re to be in the title mix next season.
Of the key players who could depart the headliner is of course Trent Alexander-Arnold, widely expected to join Real Madrid on a free at season’s end. Not too far back in the land of rumour mongering, though, has been fleet footed 28-year-old Colombian winger Luis Diaz.
Diaz has been linked with Barcelona semi-regularly since he arrived at Liverpool from Porto back in 2022, but over the last six months or so that chatter had largely faded—replaced by talk of a move to Saudi Arabia for the player whose contact runs through 2027.
Now, though, Spanish outlet Sport claim they still want Diaz—but they’ve just about given up due to their financial situation. Barcelona have spent much of the 2024-25 battling La Liga over the registration of Dani Olmo due to failing La Liga’s Financial Fair Play rules.
Add in that even without those issues a Saudi Pro League club would likely offer both a bigger transfer fee and higher wages and it becomes difficult to see a path to Catalonia for Diaz, though if the player has his heart set on Barcelona anything is possible.
And all the transfer chatter so far of course is just that—transfer chatter. Diaz was one of Liverpool manager Arne Slot’s most effective players in the first half of the season, and with a departure for striker Darwin Nuñez even more likely there’s always a chance Diaz stays.
