Virgil van Dijk Expecting “Big Summer” for Liverpool in Transfer Market

Liverpool are on their way to winning their 20th league title but their captain is still expecting a few significant moves in the offseason.
With six matchweeks to play in the 2024-25 Premier League season, Liverpool are a full 13 points clear of chasers Arsenal and know that any combination of six points earned by the Reds and dropped by the gunners will secure them their 20th league title.
They also recently announced a two-year extension for superstar forward Mohamed Salah, while captain Virgil van Dijk is expected to sign his own extension soon. Despite that, and without getting into specifics, Van Dijk says he’s expecting big moves come summer.
“I think Liverpool should be able to challenge for titles in the upcoming years,” Van Dijk told reporters following Sunday’s 2-1 victory over West Ham. “Whatever happens in terms of players going out, players coming in, I think it should be a big summer.
“I think they’re planning to make it a big summer, so we all have to trust the board to do the right job. I think we can improve. This year, there is a training camp and there is time for the team to work on what the manager wants and I think that will improve the team.”
A few big signings. Perhaps a few significant outgoings—whether that’s the likely departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free or an un-favoured big money player like striker Darwin Nuñez. Then full pre-season for the players to work with manager Arne Slot.
Before then, though, Van Dijk wants to stay focused on the task at hand—officially wrapping up the club’s 20th league title to get them level back on that perch alongside floundering historic rivals Manchester United—as well as this week’s Hillsborough memorials.
“First, all the thoughts right now should be going to the Hillsborough anniversary,” the Liverpool captain added. “I think that’s the main thing and after that we’ll see [about my contract]. Then focus will still be on Leicester, but maybe there’s some news.”
