The Liverpool winger is set to move to the Bundesliga giants as the Reds continue their ambitious forward line rebuild.

With Luis Diaz being held out of Saturday’s pre-season friendly against AC Milan due to ongoing talks with Bayern Munich over a transfer and manager Arne Slot openly discussing the situation following the match, it seemed clear a deal was close.

Today, it appears his transfer is all but done. This after widespread reports emerged that Liverpool and Bayern had agreed a €75M (£65.5M) fee for the 28-year-old Colombian winger. With personal terms believed to be in place, Diaz will be expected to depart Liverpool’s pre-season tour shortly to undergo a medical and complete the move.

Diaz arrived on Merseyside in January of 2022 in a €60M (£50M) transfer from Porto and was key to Liverpool winning their 20th league title last season, scoring 17 goals and adding eight assists in 50 appearances.

A goal involvement every 133 minutes he was on the pitch as a winger speaks to Diaz’ contributions. For comparison, Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon—mooted as a potential Diaz replacement last summer—had an involvement every 184 minutes, while this summer’s dream wing signing for Transfer FC fans, Real Madrid’s Rodrygo, clocked 138.

Those 50 appearances totalling more than 3,300 minutes are noteworthy, too. Diaz was Liverpool’s second most-played forward last season following Mohamed Salah. He was, whether by sheer minutes or total goal contributions or involvements, key.

For Liverpool, the question now turns to how to replace all of that in a transfer market where Bayern Munich and Barcelona before them both saw Diaz as the best plausibly available winger they could target.

The current consensus is that Newcastle superstar striker Alexander Isak might just be the answer given many of Diaz’ minutes came through the middle. Meanwhile, recent signing Hugo Ekitike, though nominally a striker himself, is capable of playing across the front line. If selling Diaz helps to get Isak done, there will be few complaints.

If Liverpool aren’t able to get the Isak done and head into the season a forward down or with a developmental winger like promising Lyon 20-year-old Malick Fofana as Diaz’ replacement, though, it could open the club to criticism if targets aren’t met.
