Rumor Mongering: Marc Guehi Wants To Wait Until the Summer

Liverpool need defenders. Liverpool have money. Marc Guehi is a very good defender who wants to leave his current club and has ample Premier League experience. The math should be extremely easy here, but when tens of millions of pounds are involved, nothing is ever simple.
Earlier it was reported that Manchester City, facing their own defensive injury crisis, may beat the Reds to their longtime target this winter. Now it seems that the England international may decide to wait out the season and reassess after the World Cup. His continually high level performances for Crystal Palace pretty much guarantee him a trip to North America for the contest in June.
The World Cup is notorious for artificially boosting the price tags for players who performed well for their countries in the following summer transfer window. With Guehi as free agent in the summer, this would put him in a prime position to get a big pay day, provided he makes a good enough case for himself on the world’s biggest stage.
However, Palace may have something to say about that. Manager Oliver Glasner said that the club is prepared to sell the player if the right price is reached in order to make a profit.
“There will be a threshold where the club has to say [sell] If the player says: ‘I want to leave’ and the money is above the threshold, it will happen. I’m not so naïve not to know that if a massive offer comes from City and Marc wants to do it, it will happen,” he said in a press conference.
The fee that is said to be on the table is in excess of £35million. This is money that Liverpool have available to offer. If they decide to do it instead of focusing on promising, younger players this January remains to be seen. Arne Slot has intimated that the club will not be pursuing him in this window, but managers are often tight-lipped about these delicate negotiations.
