Rafaela Borggräfe Leaves Liverpool FC Women On Loan
The tumultuous start to the Liverpool career of Rafaela Borggräfe has taken another turn. The German goalkeeper, who was brought in this summer with an expectation to being a long term replacement for Rachael Laws, has failed to have a positive impact in her opening half season with the club.
Borggräfe was conspicuously absent in the opening matches of the season, with no mention of an injury. It later was revealed that the German netminder was under investigation by the FA after her Liverpool teammates and coaches overheard her making a remark based on skin color. Borggräfe did end up playing in three matches, conceding five goals in losses, before she was officially placed on suspension.
Borggräfe’s suspension ended in January after the FA Cup win over London Bees, but Gareth Taylor and the club elected not to keep her around for the second half of the season. Jennifer Falk was brought in on loan from BK Häcken and has provided an instant upgrade in net.
With Faye Kirby and Rachael Laws available as reserves, Rafaela Borggräfe has been sent to Bayer Leverkusen in the Frauen-Bundesliga. Borggräfe will have a chance to jump start her season and try to earn playing time for a club currently sitting third in the German top flight. Borggräfe will need to unseat the current starter Friederike Abt if she is to earn any significant action this season.
It remains to be seen if Borggräfe will be part of the long term plans for Liverpool, or if the club will yet again be in the market for their long term successor in net.
