Rumour Mongering: Roma Make Contact with Mohamed Salah Seeking Return

Mohamed Salah will depart Liverpool at the end of the season, with the club and player mutually agreeing to forego the final year of his contract to allow him to depart the club on a free with the legend free to choose his destination outside of England following nine years on Merseyside.

However, that he won’t be staying in England doesn’t actually do a lot to narrow down the options. As one would expect, the Saudi Pro League have been floated as a likely option. Salah, though, has always prioritized playing in a top league for as long as possible—and the war of choice currently being waged in the region adds uncertainty for a player with a family who have spent the last nine years living in England’s north-west.

That has led to some suggestions a move to Major League Soccer in the United States could be an option. Now, though, there is chatter out of Italy that Roma have a dream, and that dream is for the now 33-year-old Salah to return to the club he first emerged as a star at.

After Salah’s disappointing stint at Chelsea, he moved to Serie A with Fiorentina on loan from Chelsea in 2014. The following season he headed to Roma, and after a year there on loan they bought him outright from Chelsea and he played a second season with them before moving to Liverpool in a £36.5M deal.

The chatter now comes by way of La Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition but has quickly been picked up by outlets across Europe. While one imagines there would be larger salaries on offer elsewhere, if family and remaining in a top league are Salah’s priority it’s not impossible to imagine him ending his career in Liverpool Red only to return to Roma.
