Van Dijk Says Reds “Have Had Good Performances but Haven’t Built on Them”
Liverpool’s 4-0 victory over Galatasaray on Wednesday evening to advance to the Champions League quarter finals was probably their best performance of the 2025-26 season. It might have been their best performance going back a full calendar year. The question now is whether they have the capacity to build on it.
For as disappointing and frustrating as things have been going back some time now, the Reds have managed to sprinkle in the odd good performance into their struggle-filled 2025-26, with the bigger problem being that they have yet to show they can follow up and turn a one-off good performance into something more consistent.
“I think occasionally we have shown that we can play good games, but not consistently and on a regular basis and that has been frustrating for all of us and for the fans as well,” captain Virgil van Dijk reflected after Wednesday’s match. “The only thing that we can do now is keep going and try to improve, but it was a good night.
“We have had good performances this season but then we haven’t been able to build on it the next time. That’s the hardest thing, doing it every three or four days. If you can do that there’s a big chance you become successful, and that’s what you strive for, that’s what we had last year, and that’s what we’re trying to reach.
“But you need multiple factors to go your way and to not get carried away. This was a demanding game physically and mentally, and it’s down to us now to do the right things to be ready for an early kick-off at Brighton because Brighton away is always difficult. We have to be ready and everyone will be needed in that sense.”
This is a group who know they have the talent to regularly perform as against Galatasaray. They did it last season regularly, at least up until the stage they’d effectively won the Premier League. Many of them have done it going back years at the club. Those who are new to the squad have exceptional pedigrees of performance.
This season has had enough let-downs and setbacks that nobody will get carried away following Wednesday’s big win, but these players have proven in the past they’re amongst the game’s elite. This squad has shown in the past that they can win the biggest prizes. Until proven otherwise, at least, well there’s always a chance.
