Virgil Van Dijk: “It was a very important win for us”

Liverpool beat Southampton 2-0 at St Mary’s on Sunday evening, in the process closing the gap on rivals Manchester United to just two points.

Virgil Van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain started against their old club, meanwhile Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana came off the bench in the second half.

Former Saint Van Dijk, highlighted the importance of the win, which was his first Premier League win in a Liverpool shirt. His only win in a Liverpool shirt came in the FA Cup, scoring a late winner to dispatch local rivals Everton at Anfield.

Van Dijk: “It was a very important win for us, in the challenge for the Champions League.”

Van Dijk summarised how he felt about being back at St Mary’s.

Van Dijk: “I enjoyed it a lot, I just focused on the game and I enjoyed being back. I have a lot of good memories here and I did a lot of good things here.”

Van Dijk also said how he felt about the win and the reception that he received from the home fans.

Van Dijk: “For me as a Liverpool player right now, I am very happy with the win. You can’t do anything about the reception, I just did my thing.”

The Reds face Porto in Portugal on Wednesday night in the Champions League.

Their next home fixture is against West Ham United a week on Saturday.
