Bayern Munich Legend Picks Liverpool as Champions League Contenders

Lothar Matthäus is impressed by what Klopp has done at Anfield and wouldn’t be surprised if they won the Champions League.

Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp look a revived force in European football, and even if they aren’t quite where they want to be yet—regularly winning titles and trophies domestically and in continental competition—it’s been hard not to notice.

So said former Bayern Munich star Lothar Matthäus following the weekend’s legends game at Anfield, when 1991’s FIFA Footballer of the Year spoke about the impact he believes Klopp has made already in his time at Anfield—and with more likely to come.

“He is working very hard, his team is always ready to fight for 90 minutes, and they are in good condition,” Matthäus told the club’s official website. “He finds the right players, especially in the offence, who can make the difference on the highest level.

“He is a powerful coach. He can get people to take to him—the players and the fans. He has done a very good job. I believed from the beginning that he and Liverpool have a very good relationship. You can see that in the good results.”

Not always perfect results but, generally, good results. Results that have shown a lot of promise from a still-young side that has improved over Klopp’s time at the club, aided by a series of transfer market successes.

And while the expectation is that the project isn’t yet done—that a busy summer could see a few big-name signings, especially in midfield—Matthäus believes that, under Klopp, this is a side can bring home a big prize this season.

“He has bought the right players,” the former Bayern man added. “For me, it is a team that can win the Champions League in two months in Kiev.”
