Craig Bellamy: Mohamed Salah Won’t Leave In The Summer

The former Liverpool player thinks the Spanish Giants won’t come for Salah, at least not yet.

With each and every spectacular moment that Mohamed Salah creates on the pitch, you can almost hear the murmurs of him leaving Liverpool becoming more intense off the pitch. What started as a whisper has now become a cacophony, with some fans all but convinced that FSG will sell Salah to Barcelona or Real Madrid in the summer.

Liverpool, for their part, have tried to control the narrative, with several club-connected journalists coming out yesterday to assert that the club would not sell in the upcoming window.

Last night on “The Debate” on Sky Sports, former Liverpool player Craig Bellamy also opined the talented Egyptian winger was going nowhere, but for an altogether different reason than the club refusing to sell.

“If I was Liverpool, I’d take it as a compliment, why wouldn’t top clubs be interested?” Bellamy said. “I’d be worried if they weren’t.

”Real Madrid and Barcelona, who could be prepared to pay big money, will surely want to see another year from Salah.

”There are other players out there that have proved themselves over two or three years who might be closer to going to those types of clubs. Those types of clubs are the pinnacle of football—if they come in for you, you want to be a part of that. They are on another planet, but I don’t see it happening this summer.”

This is an interesting—and valid—take from Bellamy. The money it would take to dislodge Salah would likely be near record breaking. And for that much money, the investment should be more than a flash-in-the-pan. Although Salah turned it up to 11 this season, already nearly doubling his goal total from last year at Roma, there’s no guarantee that he would produce the same kind of numbers at another club next season.

Of course, this is all speculative. And as we were painfully reminded in January, there’s little the club can do if a player decides to force his way out. Hopefully Klopp and FSG can do enough to convince Salah to continue buying-in at Anfield.
