Rumour Mongering: Liverpool and Manchester City Given Jorginho Boost

The Serie A star says he can see himself playing in England and his agent is talking about the future in vague terms.

Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Arsenal have all been linked with a move for Napoli’s talented 26-year-old midfielder Jorginho in recent months and the player has come out this week to say that he could see himself making the switch to England.

“I think that I could fit,” Jorginho said when asked whether he could see himself in the Premier League—though he quickly added that it would have to be for a side playing a certain way, fast and aggressive, looking to press off the ball and transition quickly on it.

“It depends on who else is around me—I need players with the same characteristics that I have. There are English teams with this style of play, ball on the ground, quick transitions, high pressure. If one of those teams wanted me, I could fit and the other way round.”

It’s a quote that will have City fans in particular excited, especially given Jorginho also spoke of his pride at being praised by Pep Guardiola when talking to reporters during the international break, but it’s a template that will suit Liverpool fans’ daydreams, too.

It’s less of an obvious fit for United and manager Jose Mourinho, while Arsenal look an uncertain prospect heading into a potential tumultuous offseason. For City and Liverpool, though, it seems as though Jorginho’s idea of how he plays lines up rather well.

Meanwhile, the player’s agent has also been speaking to the press this week, and despite that Napoli are in the midst of a title challenge he sounds like he’s already planning for a future away from Serie A—and a potential big money move to the Premier League.

“He has a certain value for Napoli, a certain figure that almost only Premier League clubs can afford,” said agent Joao Santos. “He can’t be sold to another club in Italy but he’s being followed by big teams and that’s normal because he plays at the highest levels.

“To date, no official offers have arrived. Jorginho’s only thinking about Napoli and we must wait until the end of the season to make certain assessments. As for Napoli, we haven’t received a contract offer from them yet.”
