Karius Humble About His Excellent Save

The keeper maintains that he was just happy to help the team.

This season has been a bit of a bumpy ride for Liverpool keeper Loris Karius. He spent most of it alternating goalkeeping duties with Simon Mignolet, until Klopp finally settled on Karius as the official number one. After that, he had to prove himself worthy of that important role amid plenty of healthy skepticism among fans and pundits alike.

Though there have been some misstep since Karius came into the role, the young German keeper has done well to begin building consistent confidence in his performances.

Saturday’s showing against Everton will only help his cause. It was another clean sheet for Liverpool — and Karius’s second in a week — and came with the added bonus of a wonderful fingertip save in the first half.

In the first half, Yannick Bolasie collected the ball about 25-yards out, manuevered it onto his right foot and blasted a perfectly curled thunderbolt right into the far corner of Karius’s net. With a well-placed dive, Karius was able to get the barest touch on it, enough to knock the ball away from the goal and behind for a corner.

About it afterward, Karius was modest, downplaying the excellent save and saying, “I don’t know [if it was my best]. In the game, you just try and help the team,” he told Sky Sports. “I don’t know how good it was or not, it goes too quick. I was just happy to get a fingertip on it.

”It’s good to get a save like this but the most important thing for us [was] to get a clean sheet because the back four was new with Clyney coming back in after a long time and Klavan is not [usually] a left-back. So that’s really pleasing for us.”

Let’s hope these two clean sheets have created a habit, and Karius and his teammates will be able to repeat the feat at the far more intimidating Etihad Stadium when they take on Manchester City in the return leg of the Champions League quarterfinal.
