Leroy Sané Says Manchester City Are Ready for the Anfield Noise

The City winger says his side won’t be put off by the Anfield noise the second time around.

In January, Manchester City visited Anfield in what turned out to the be Premier League’s game of the season so far. It was also the loudest Anfield has been this season—at least so far. And City seemed caught out by both the intensity of Liverpool’s players and fans.

This time around, though, with City travelling to Anfield for the first leg of the Champions League quarter finals, they know what to expect and won’t be put off by it. Or at least that’s what Leroy Sané says, with the young winger insisting his side is ready for the noise.

“It’s a really good stadium and the atmosphere is really good, but I don’t think we’ll bother too much about the noise,” Sané said. “We always try to play our games and will be focused enough. For me, it makes it a lot of fun to play when the atmosphere is really loud.”

For Sané, who spent three seasons at Borussia Dortmund and says he’s experienced loud crowds of the sort City faced at Anfield in January and will again on Wednesday, the noise may be something that’s manageable—may even help to fire him up a little more.

It certainly didn’t look like that was something that could be said about the entire City team, though, at least not when the two sides last met. The question, then, is whether their experience in January will prepare them for a likely even louder reception this time out.

Sané, for his part, believes they will be. Liverpool fans will be hoping to prove him wrong and show that, even if it’s been a few years since they’ve been there, there’s nothing quite like a mid-week night at Anfield in the Champions League knockout rounds.

“Even if it is coming from the other team, it pushes you a bit more,” Sané added. “Everyone is really excited about the game. For the best atmospheres, I remember the derby between Schalke and Dortmund, and playing at Celtic last season, which was amazing.”
