Liverpool Lead Premier League In Spending (On Agents)

Well. I did not see that coming.

Agents. The word alone is enough to make sports fans the world over instinctively spit on the ground. Agents. A necessary evil. They protect their players’ interests, but are also responsible for driving up the prices, and taking money out of the game.

And Liverpool, at least this season, have been especially good to agents. The Reds paid a whooping £26.8 million in fees to agents in 2017/18, more than any of their English counterparts. As a point of comparison, Chelsea and Manchester City were the next highest spenders, spending £25 million and £23 million respectively. Manchester United were fourth, spending £18 million.

It is a big step up for Liverpool, nearly doubling the agent fees paid over the last two seasons, £14.3 million in 2015/16 and £13.8 million last year, which was good enough for fourth on the list both years.

The outsized agent fees are especially impressive considering Liverpool only signed five players in this time, including Dominic Solanke on a free, and Andy Robertson for a bargain basement deal of £8 million. If Liverpool’s strategy is to shell out a few more quid to agents (as distasteful as it may be!) in order to land their targets, it could be a good one.

Hopefully Jorginho’s agent takes notice of this report.
