The Young And The Restless: Juventus Calls For End to Emre Can ‘Soap Opera’

It’s possible this soap opera exists only in Beppe Marotta’s mind.

If you’ve been following this series, you would have noticed that it’s yet another day ending in “y”, so of course Juventus Chief Executive Giuseppe Marotta had something new to say about his club’s pursuit of Emre Can. In prior episodes, had been more circumspect about the likelihood of Can ending up in Turin, while reiterating Juve’s strong interest and simultaneously scaring their supporters by mentioning Jack Wilshere as a possible alternative.

This time, Marotta is dialing the dramatic music up to eleven, although this might admittedly be a cliffhanger that exists solely in his imagination. Speaking to Mediaset, Marotta expressed frustration at the lack of a resolution around Can’s future employers. As a reminder, the Liverpool midfielder’s contract runs it course at the end of this season, and there has been little public mention of any progress in contract talks, with many supporters already operating on the assumption that the player will be somewhere else next season.

“I’m not sure myself what the situation is,” admitted Marotta. “Within the next ten days, we want to wrap up this soap opera. The player is right to want to evaluate his opportunities, we have to recognize that this will play out according to his wishes.”

If there is a clear resolution to the Emre Can saga in ten days, it will definitely be something of a surprise, given that the player’s representatives have indicated a desire to shut down all contract/transfer talk until the end of the season, in order to focus on Liverpool’s league and European progress. The fact that he is dealing with a persistent back issue that could limit his availability indefinitely suggests a resolution is farther off than Marotta should expect. That, however, is unlikely to stop him from talking about Can in the interim.
