Emre Can to Miss Champions League Final and World Cup with Injury

The German international’s back injury will prevent him from taking part in both Kyiv and Russia.

In recent weeks, there had been some hopeful talk that, just maybe, Emre Can would be fit enough to make the bench for Liverpool at the Champions League final. It turns out calling such talk hopeful may have been something of an understatement.

Not only has Can been all but ruled out of any final appearance by Liverpool, but now he has been left off Germany’s preliminary World Cup squad, signalling that his national team do not believe he will be fit in time to play a part for them in Russia.

It’s a significant blow for the midfielder. A month ago he looked a key part of Liverpool’s deep Champions League run and was a lock to head to the World Cup. He also looked to have a payday on the horizon with his contract running down.

Now, his Liverpool season—and, in all likelihood, his Liverpool career—will end with him on the injured list. Now, he won’t take part in the World Cup. He may still have a payday on the horizon, but even that storyline has begun to feel played out.

He will likely still end up at Juventus this summer, but with a serious injury sidelining him and that transfer saga having dragged on for most of a year, the actual completion it, when it comes, will be hard to seem anything but anticlimactic.
