Joe Gomez’ Season Ends with Ankle Surgery

The Liverpool defender will miss the Champions League final and won’t be available to be selected for the World Cup.

Liverpool received more bad news on the fitness front today with word from the club that Joe Gomez had been forced to undergo ankle surgery for a knock he had been carrying since the end of March and that had already forced him to miss three league games.

Despite the issue, which forced Gomez out of the lineup against Crystal Palace, Everton, and Bournemouth along with European dates against Manchester City and Roma, the player returned to face West Brom and Stoke. He played those games while injured, though.

And, with the issue persisting, the club and player decided following the Stoke match to shut things down for the season and send the player to undergo surgery, meaning he will definitely miss the Champions League final in two weeks and also the World Cup.

Both are major blows for the player, still only just 20 years old but having made significant contributions to Liverpool’s season before he suffered the ankle injury and working himself well into the mix for the England squad at the World Cup in Russia this summer.

While Gomez wasn’t a lock to make it into Gareth Southgate’s final squad, had he stayed fit and played well for Liverpool through the end of the season the odds would have been heavily in his favour. Now, instead, Gomez’ summer plans turn to recovery.

Hopefully he will be ready to go in time for pre-season, when if he is he will be expected to challenge for a role at centre half moving forward after filling in capably at right back this season due to the long-term injury to Nathaniel Clyne.
