Rumor Mongering: Liverpool to Sign Ukrainian Goalkeeper

Reports indicate Liverpool are in for Ukraine Goalkeeper, Andriy Lunin.

Another day, another transfer rumor. This time, the focus is goalkeeper with the Reds supposedly in a three-team battle for the signature of Ukraine international Andriy Lunin.

Lunin was a product of the Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk youth set up before transferring this past summer to Zorya. Zorya’s Number 1 has a bit of mixed bag in terms of results: clear first choice for all competitions, Andriy has tallied 34 appearances and allowed a gaudy 51 goals over that term. Still, Lunin has impressed this season with 10 clean sheets across all competitions to his - including a clean sheet in the Europa League in an away tie against Althletic Bilabo. Coinciding with his club success, Lunin logged his first appearance with Ukraine’s senior team.

There’s enough in Andriy’s locker to interest scouts across Europe. Earlier this season, the Ukrainian shot-stopper had been linked with a move to Italy, but current reports indicate Liverpool Football Club as the front-runner in the race for Lunin’s signature with Lecister and Watford. Should Lunin sign, however, he would remain third on the depth chart at goalkeeper with Loris Karius seemingly having laid claim to the top spot and either Simon Mignolet or, as other rumors indicate, even Pepe Reina slated as the backup. All signs indicate that this move, if made, is one with an eye to the future.

Which makes sense: Liverpool’s transfer strategy for this offseason looks to plug holes for the departing Emre Can and, hopefully, one more frontline starter in the center of midfield to make two new arrivals to partner with Naby Keita. The remaining transfer purse would then be looked to increase depth for a team with designs to be chasing honors across 4 competitions next season.
