Buvac uncertainty persists as Bosnian misses out on Fenerbahce job

Uncertainty over the future of former Liverpool assistant Zeljko Buvac remains after rumours he was set to take over at Turkish club Fenerbahce came to nothing.

Buvac, famously labelled “the brain” of Jurgen Klopp’s coaching team, unofficially left the Liverpool set-up in April amid rumours of a bust-up with the German.

Thereafter, Buvac was tentatively linked the Arsenal job, but the first concrete interest in his services emerged from Fenerbache, whose Sporting Director Damien Comolli, once of Liverpool, was particularly keen on appointing him.

However, it was announced on Friday that Phillip Cocu, formerly of PSV, will take over at the Istanbul-based outfit.

It remains to be seen whether Buvac will return to Anfield or seek a managerial role elsewhere.

Liverpool’s official line on the matter is that the 56-year-old remains a club employee.

For the moment, though, it seems highly unlikely that he will be present at Melwood when the Reds kick off their pre-season preparations at the beginning of July.

Earlier this month, Pepijn Lijnders left his position as NEC boss and returned to Anfield to resume his key role in Klopp’s coaching staff.
