Henderson lavished with praise by England boss Southgate

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson has been labelled “an outstanding person with outstanding leadership qualities” by England manager Gareth Southgate.

Henderson has played a starring role for his country in their run to the semi-finals of the World Cup, earning widespread plaudits and transforming long-established opinions.

Addressing the press ahead of England’s clash with Croatia on Wednesday night, Southgate spoke very highly of his midfield linchpin, emphasising his qualities on and off the ball.

“I think the quality of his game has gone onto another level this season,” Southgate said.

“Jordan is a player that has been underestimated for a long time. I watched him a lot at Sunderland as a young player. He has the total trust of his manager at club level. He’s an outstanding person with outstanding leadership qualities.”

“His positional understanding, his reading of danger, you can see he’s seeing really clear pictures with the ball. A couple of his through balls the other night were exceptional. He’s playing at the top of his game, we’re very fortunate to have him.”

The 28-year-old is set to line-up against Liverpool team-mate Dejan Lovren at the Luzhniki Stadium and will already have his eyes on the ultimate prize, having been denied Champions League glory in May.

Henderson faces a real battle for a starting role at Anfield this season following the arrival of highly-rated defensive midfielder Fabinho from Monaco.
